When you can’t decide between a spirited drive on the mountain roads or just plain driving straight over the mountain, the fine folks over at Vagabund Moto have the solve. Enter the Vagabund Safari 944, a kit designed in partnership with Austria’s NINE ELEVEN Outlaw to transform the humble 944 into “a vehicle that can go on any road or surface, in any season.” The gents at Vagabund are no strangers to automotive projects, having produced a custom 4×4 Lada Niva, a tastefully-modded daily-driver Porsche 911, and Reiterer Autohaus collab build on a BMW 850i.

The 944 is a highly-capable yet often overlooked and under-appreciated member of the Porsche family. Being one of the more affordable entry-points into the Porsche world, the 944 made an accessible platform for Vagabund and NINE ELEVEN to create a conversion kit. For now, the conversions will need to be performed in Vagabund’s Austrian workshop and they will build off of any generation and variant of the Porsche 924(S) or Porsche 944.

What Comes in the Safari 944 Kit

In order to take the 944 from the sporty Porsche to all-out overland beast, Vagabund starts by lifting the 944 by 40mm through a combination of new spring plates, a revised rear axle conversion, and new rear shock absorbers. The Safari 944 gets fitted with powder-coated wheels and new shoes in the form of Maxxis Trepador or Bridgestone Dueler A/T’s. An upgraded light setup includes four HELLA Rallye 1000 or Comet 500 lights illuminates the trail at night and a custom short shifter comes from NINE ELEVEN Outlaw X Shark Motorsports while a custom horn button for the upgraded MOMO steering wheel is provided by Vagabund.

Additionally, a custom-made roof rack holds a complete spare rim and tire and any other gear you may need on your next overland adventure. If you’re feeling fancy (read: have deeper pockets), additional upgrades include a custom aluminum front guard with underbody cover, hydraulic fly-off handbrake, studded tires, a limited slip differential by Drexler, towing hooks, coil-over suspension, and a stainless steel exhaust.
