When you want to capture scenes from your adventures — be it a cruise through the mountains of Iceland or leading a parade of jalopies on a 500-mile journey — there’s no shortage of options: smartphones, DSLR and mirrorless cams, and, of course, GoPros. But a step above in terms of quality output is the Insta360 RS One, a high-powered action, web, and live streaming device that captures 360-degree 21-megapixel photos and 6K videos.

It won’t come cheap. Insta360 teamed up with Leica — a brand hardcore photogs praise for high-quality lenses and craftmanship — and added two 1-inch CMOS sensors for upgraded image stabilization and smoother videos. For comparison, the RS One will run you $799, the GoPro Max — the brand’s 360 action cam — is $350.

That said, you can be a little rougher with the GoPro than the RS One. For starters, the GoPro is waterproof up to 16 feet deep; the RS One only has a rating of IPX 3 water resistant, which means the device is protected against spraying water when tilted up to 60 degrees vertical. Plus, we’d put the kid gloves on simply for the price tag alone; at $800, we’re not putting this baby anywhere remotely unsecured to avoid the heartache or watching it tumble off of a mountain or get squashed by a truck tire while offroading.

That said, it’s the way to go if you’re looking to level up for the two RS One sensors and 360 imaging. Do so and your content will be thismuch cleaner, sharper, and smoother than the competition.
