Motorcycles Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire S2 Del Mar Is Smaller and More Nimble Than Its PredecessorLiveWire, the Harley-Davidson electric motorcycle spinoff brand, launched their first new model nearly three years after its debut.

Good news: There’s a new LiveWire on the block.

Also, bad news: All 100 limited edition LiveWire S2 Del Mar Launch Edition models sold out a mere 18 minutes after the newest LiveWire model was announced by parent brand Harley-Davidson.

Those lucky enough to snag one will see theirs delivered in spring 2023. The rest of us? We’ll just have to wait.

(1) The LiveWire S2 Del Mar Launch Edition in Jasper Gray.

It’s been nearly three years since the release of the all-electric LiveWire under the Harley-Davidson name. The LiveWire was a bold statement from the bar and shield about the future of motorcycling. Initially, the release was met with mixed emotions, ranging from the V-twin die-hard disgust to enthusiastic support from future-minded motorcyclists.

Still, one thing was for certain: The LiveWire was a game-changer for Harley, with one ride on the 100-hp torque monster being enough to change the mind of even the most disagreeable combustion-engine curmudgeon.

(2) The LiveWire One.

However, a price point exceeding even the top-of-the-line Harley model combined with plenty of R&D and marketing expenses netted Harley a healthy loss in the first two years. Then the LiveWire brand was chipped off the H-D block to become it’s own entity – aptly called LiveWire — and received the SPAC treatment in December of 2021 to get the stone rolling. The first model released under the new company, the LiveWire One, was essentially a rebadged version of the original with a slightly lower price point. But with the release of S2 Del Mar, the first new model to come from LiveWire, they are making a statement about their future intentions with the brand. And if they hope to achieve their goal of selling over 100,000 units by 2026, it’s a jump start they will need.

The LiveWire S2 Del Mar

The Launch Edition Del Mar came out of the gate at $17,699. As mentioned, it only took 18 minutes for the first 100 to sell out after Harley made the announcement. The production version of the Del Mar — the S2 Del Mar — will come in at a target price of $15,000.

Looking like a smaller, youthful, and more nimble LiveWire, the S2 Del Mar features a predicted output of 80 hp (59.6 kW) and weighs less than 440 lbs (nearly 120lbs lighter than its older sibling) and will deliver a projected 0-to-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds, and target range of 100 city miles. The S2 Del Mar is presented as an “urban street tracker” with tracker style handlebars and 19-inch front and rear wheels wrapped in custom LiveWire Dunlop DT1 tires claiming to be capable both on and off-road.

The S2 Del Mar is built around LiveWire’s ARROW architecture; the proprietary battery, motor, charging, and control systems which are debuting on the Del Mar model and designed at LiveWire Labs in Mountain View, California. “The ARROW architecture underpinning the Del Mar, developed in-house at LiveWire Labs, demonstrates our ambition to lead in the EV space and establish LiveWire as the most desirable electric motorcycle brand in the world,” said Jochen Zeitz, Chairman, President and CEO of Harley-Davidson. “The S2 Del Mar model represents the next step in the evolution of the LiveWire brand.”

(4) The LiveWire S2 Del Mar Launch Edition in Comet Indigo.

The Launch Edition Del Mar seen here features an exclusive a hand-finished graphic and paint package of Jasper Gray or Comet Indigo and the cast-aluminum wheels feature a vaulted and tapered spoke design for added strength while also evoking the patterning and framework found of printed circuit boards.

All LiveWire S2 Del Mar motorcycles will be assembled at Harley-Davidson Vehicle Operations in York, PA, and while the Launch Edition is sold out, LiveWire is still aiming at 100,000 new riders over the next few years, so expect to see the production version of the S2 Del Mar for sale immediately after delivery of the Launch Edition in Spring of 2023.
