An interview with Rich Christoff, Lead Designer of the Indian® Scout™
What does the Indian Scout mean to you?
“The Indian Scout, to me, means a lot of things. It’s about America. It’s a heritage of innovation. My intention, through this new Indian® Scout™ , was to honor the people who put in so much time and sweat and energy and passion and love into making the original Scout. And the fearless riders who built its reputation one ride at a time.”
How did you manage to keep the “legendary soul” of the old Indian® Scout™?
“We paid a lot of attention to the details. The simplicity of the frame. The rigid-style triangle made by the frame and shock. The full paint from the laydown shock—which was typically only a feature of the old rigids. It's a motorcycle that constantly looks in motion, with grace.
When you’re designing a new bike, where do you start?
“The sketch phase is where it starts. You’re thinking about what the overall emotional character of the motorcycle is gonna be.
What do you, personally, think about the new Indian® Scout™?
“I think it’s F@#$#$’ sweet. I’m proud as hell.”
